2. Grammar Point: 不 (bù)
Use 不 to negate present or future actions, states, and habitual truths.
Structure: Subject + 不 + Verb
Examples:
- 我不是老师。
(Wǒ bù shì lǎo shī.) – I am not a teacher. - 他不喜欢喝水。
(Tā bù xǐ huān hē shuǐ.) – He doesn’t like drinking water. - 我今天不去学校。
(Wǒ jīn tiān bù qù xué xiào.) – I’m not going to school today.
Note: 不 is placed before the verb, including 是 and action verbs.
3. Grammar Point: 没有 (méiyǒu)
Use 没有 to negate past actions or to say you don’t have something.
Structure: Subject + 没有 + Verb/Object
Examples:
- 我没有水。
(Wǒ méi yǒu shuǐ.) – I don’t have water. - 他昨天没有去学校。
(Tā zuó tiān méi yǒu qù xuéxiào.) – He didn’t go to school yesterday. - 她没有猫。
(Tā méi yǒu māo.) – She doesn’t have a cat.
Note: In spoken Chinese, you can also only use 没 when negating past actions.
For example, you can say 他昨天没去学校 instead of 他昨天没有去学校 to convey the same message.
